Chapter 8

Victor returned not long later, and I must have given up consciousness again, because I definitely startled awake when he sat on the edge of my bunk.

Then immediately hissed, because now there was light.

Victor clucked his tongue and held his hand between the lamp and my face, which allowed my eyesight to adjust. The light had the slightly off glow of LEDs, and was set on a small table anchored between the bunks. Venus had been right, the cots were separated by at least three decent-sized strides. Likely a third set of bunks was placed in the small steerage area on exceptionally heavy cargo trips. Was this the sort of set up in the boat that took one of the Spiderlings from Costa Rica?

Probably. It was a wonder we could find anybody, with all the creative ways that still existed to disappear despite the advances in surveillance and tracking technology.

Better for me, in this moment, that that was still the case.

“Good to see you,” I said, and to this day I believe I earned quite a few points with how incredibly calm I remained through all of this. I should be a Director Plus, once this was all done.

“It’s been a while,” Victor responded, his stupid deep voice amused while he smiled a stupid smile on his stupidly beautiful face. I actively wanted to bite him, and forced myself to sit up and away from him instead.

“I did call,” I pointed out, which was true, and he snorted.

“Lost my phone.” He leaned back, angled so he could face Venus and me at the same time. “Time for a debrief?”

“Past time. First though—what’s the ETA on getting out of this?”

“Six hours, give or take five hours.” Victor waggled a hand side to side. “Pending customs, tides, guard boats, and a storm.”

“In that order?”

“Just about.” Victor smiled again, but this time it was less charming and stupid and more wry. “I can give you the short version now and the longer version when we’re on more stable ground.”

“If that was a motion in the ocean pun, Victor, I’m going to stab you.” Calm. I was all the calm. But that wasn’t an entirely idle threat, if I’m honest.

“The short version—I was sent to recover an object. I found the object, but was found in turn. A gentleman I’d never seen before pulled me into what might have been a pocket dimension to give me the second-best recruitment spiel I’ve ever heard in my life.”

“To join the Spider,” Venus murmured. “I received one of those as well.”

“Was the pocket dimension gentleman on the street you exploded a little while ago? With two other guys, and he was the middle height?”

“Yes.” Victor frowned; evidentially his memories of the Time Bandit weren’t pleasant. “Do you know him?”

“More ‘of’ him. He does something with time. You knocked him down but didn’t kill him, at least in the first explosion.”

He turned his full attention to me, confused. “He disappeared the moment I triggered the explosion. I assumed to his pocket dimension again.
